Changing a Tap Washer: Everything You Need to Know

A dripping tap can be more than just a minor annoyance—it’s often a sign that the tap washer needs replacing. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essentials of changing a tap washer, from identifying the problem to doing the job yourself, or knowing when to call a professional.

What Is a Tap Washer?

A tap washer is a small, circular disc located inside most taps. It plays a crucial role in controlling water flow, sealing the tap when it’s turned off. Over time, tap washers wear out, which can lead to dripping taps and water waste.

Signs Your Tap Washer Needs Changing

If you’re experiencing any of the following issues, it’s likely time to consider changing a tap washer:

  • Dripping tap: The most obvious sign, a slow drip indicates the washer is worn and no longer sealing properly.
  • Difficulty turning the tap off: If you need to apply extra force to close the tap, it’s likely the washer has hardened or become misaligned.

What Happens If You Don’t Change the Tap Washer?

Ignoring a faulty tap washer can lead to more serious problems. What starts as a small drip can turn into a bigger issue, like:

  • Higher water bills: A dripping tap can waste a significant amount of water over time, increasing your utility costs.
  • Worn-out tap mechanisms: As you apply more force to turn off a faulty tap, you can damage the internal components, leading to more costly repairs down the line.

How to Change a Tap Washer: Our Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re confident in your DIY skills, here’s a simple guide to changing a tap washer:

Taking the handle off a bathroom sink tap

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Pliers
  • Adjustable spanner or wrench
  • Allen key
  • Replacement tap washer, including new O rings and spindle
  • Cloth or towel
  • Bucket

Steps:

1. Turn off the water supply: This is crucial to avoid a mess. Locate your home’s water meter box and turn it off (you might need a pair of pliers).

2. Open the tap that needs to be changed: This will release any remaining water in the system.

3. Remove the tap handle: You’ll need to identify the type of tap you have before removing it.

  • If you have a lever or pin handle, remove the hidden grub screw on the side with an Allen key.
  • If you have a T-handle, there will either be a grub screw on the side which can be removed with an Allen key, a hidden nut underneath which you’ll remove with a spanner, or a screwed hot and cold button on top that can be taken off with a wrench.
  • If you have a standard plastic handle, you can use a flat head screwdriver to remove the cover cap. Next, use pliers to take off the brass locking nut.

4. Remove the spindle cover: Find the spindle cover, a domed piece that hides the tap’s base. Twist it counterclockwise to remove. If stuck, apply WD-40 or carefully cut away silicone with a craft knife. Once loosened, lift it off.

5. Remove the spindle: Use an adjustable wrench to turn the spindle counterclockwise and loosen it. Once loose, unscrew and remove it. You’ll now see the tap valve, a rubber or fiber disc that seals the tap and controls water flow. If the valve is stuck, use pliers to pull it out.

6. Replace the tap washer: Separate the spindle from the brass body by turning it clockwise. Replace the old washer with a new one, and swap out the O-rings on the spindle. Lubricate the new O-rings, reinsert the spindle, and tighten everything back in place.

Reassemble the tap by doing Step 1 in reverse, ensuring the tap is off before turning the water supply back on.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even with a simple task like changing a tap washer, mistakes can happen. Here are a few to watch out for:

  • Over-tightening the tap: This can damage the washer and other components, causing further issues.
  • Forgetting to turn off the water: Not doing this will result in a lot of unwanted water everywhere!
